Dr. Simona Hunyadi Murph, an adjunct professor at the University of Georgia and a Fellow Scientist at Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL), was selected as the 2023 SRNL Inventor of the Year. This award recognizes inventors who have made significant scientific or engineering contributions that have important societal or financial impact while advancing the reputation of Battelle as a leading provider of innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing problems.

Murph is a preeminent researcher with a focus on shape-selective and hybrid nanomaterials and her work is accelerating the discovery of new materials.  Her nanoscience and nanotechnology research efforts are being translated into pioneering technologies for environmental stewardship, clean energy, sustainability initiatives and national security missions. She has authored an impressive body of literature with over 130 publications and more than 6,000 citations. Apart from the extensive list of publications and citations, a key indicator of the impact of her work is 19 issued or pending patents.

She was celebrated at the Battelle Celebration of Solvers in Columbus, Ohio. In the photos, Murph accepts her award from Battelle President and CEO Lou Von Thaer and is introduced by the Executive Vice-President for National Laboratory Management and Operations, Dr. Mark Peters.
