Undergraduate Transfer Policy

Transfer Credit for Introductory Physics and Astronomy Courses

Course credit from other institutions may be eligible for transfer as UGA PHYS or ASTR credit, if the courses meet the criteria listed below. If you have questions, please contact the appropriate Undergraduate Coordinator:

Be sure to include your name, UGA email address, and UGA ID number (81x), and a clear description of your question or request.

General Criteria:

  • The transfer courses must match the number of credit hours of the corresponding UGA course.
  • If the UGA course has both lecture and lab components, you must have taken both lecture and lab components at the other institution. We cannot transfer lecture only or lab only.
  • For example, in order for a course to transfer as PHYS 1111, you must have taken both the lecture and lab components at the other institution, for a combined 4 credit hours. Some institutions may treat the lecture and lab as 4+0 credits (or a combined 4 credit course), others as 3+1 credits.

Transfers from schools in the University System of Georgia (USG):

Transfers for General Education Core credit (non-science majors)

  • Non-science majors looking to fulfill their General Education Core requirement for “Area II: Physical Science” (with or without lab) should email the name of the institution, a course description, and a copy of the syllabus to the Undergraduate Physics Coordinator (mgeller@uga.edu).
  • If you are requesting Area II lab credit, you must also provide information about the lab, including a lab syllabus (if separate from the main syllabus) and a list of lab activities.
  • More information may be requested if needed.

Transfers for Introductory Physics sequences (1111/1112 and 1211/1212)

  • If the course number matches the UGA course number, the course will transfer, so long as you take both the lecture and lab.
  • We cannot combine a lecture from another institution with a lab from UGA, or vice versa, so you must take both in order for the credit to transfer.
  • Other USG institutions name their calculus-based introductory courses differently (e.g 2211 instead of 1211), but they will still transfer.
  • If the other institution splits credits differently between lecture and lab (e.g. 3+1 instead of 4+0), the transfer may not go through automatically. In that case, please contact the Undergraduate Physics Coordinator (mgeller@uga.edu) to correct the issue.

Transfers from schools outside the University System of Georgia (USG):

  • Students requesting transfer credit for one of the introductory physics courses with lab should email the name of the institution, a course description, a copy of the syllabus (both lecture and lab, if separate), and a list of lab activities to the Undergraduate Physics Coordinator (mgeller@uga.edu).
  • More information may be requested if needed.
  • We cannot combine a lecture from another institution with a lab from UGA, or vice versa, so you must take both in order for the credit to transfer.

Transfers for Upper-level Courses

Please send requests for upper-level transfer credit to the appropriate Undergraduate Coordinator.

Get Started!

Submit your transcript from the other institution to UGA Undergraduate Admissions. You can visit their Transfer Equivalency Search Page

When the credit shows up in your DegreeWorks audit, check whether it has transferred as your desired course. If not, contact the appropriate Undergraduate Coordinator to request a transfer credit equivalency. Be sure to include:

  • A clear description of your request.
  • The necessary files and information, as listed in the sections above.
  • Your name, UGA email address, and UGA ID number (81x).

Your gift helps to fund research, travel, and field experience for students and faculty.
