Course

The textbook for this course is Physics for Scientists and Engineers, by R. A. Serway and J. W. Jewett, Jr., latest Edition. The course will cover Chapters 23-31, 35-38 and, hopefully, 40, 45, and 46. All textbook sections marked with an asterisk (*) will be omitted, unless announced otherwise in the lecture. Some unmarked sections will also be omitted, and will be announced in the class.

For each Chapter, selected Textbook Problems (TP) and Questions will be assigned which the students must study before each lecture, as well as the corresponding part of the text chapter. Some Additional Textbook Problems (AP) will also be assigned and announced during the classes. Working all assigned TP“s and all AP“s is essential for the students to absorb the material and to prepare for the Tests and Final. Your solution for the textbook and additional problems and questions will not be graded. Examples that are solved in the textbook will not be worked in the class. Some textbook problems, on the other hand, will be.

Exams

There will be three in-class Tests and one Final Exam. All Tests and Exams are closed book and closed notes. When necessary, a calculator can be used for arithmetic only in solving the tests and exam. The material to be covered in each Test and Test dates will be announced in the lecture, at least one week prior to the test date. It is the students“ responsibility to stay informed about all announcements concerning this course by attending the lecture. For this reason attendance is mandatory and will be monitored occasionally.

Office hours

The office hours are to be determined. The students are encouraged to see the instructor during those hours.

Grading

Your final score will be determined from your overall performance in the class taking into account tests, final exam, and laboratory grade with the following weights:

where FS is the final percentage score, T1, T2, and T3 are the percentage scores of the three Tests, FE is the percentage score of the Final Exam, and LB the overall percentage score of the Laboratory section of the course. In case the percentage score of the lowest-scoring Test is less than that of the Final Exam, the score of the Final FE will be substituted for that one lowest-scoring Test only. In case of an excused absence from any Test, the score of the Final Exam FE will be substituted for the score of that test. It is the instructor's discretion to determine what constitutes an excused absence. No make-up tests or quizzes will be given.  The overall letter grade in this course will follow the Table below:

                                                     FS>= 95           A

                                        90 =<  FS  <  95           A-

                                        85 =<   FS <  90            B+

                                        75 =<   FS < 85             B

                                        70 =<   FS < 75             B-

                                        65 =<   FS < 70             C+

                                        55 =<   FS < 65             C

                                        50 =<   FS < 55             C-

                                        30 =<   FS < 50             D

                                                    FS < 30              F
