Linear and Nonlinear Spectroscopy of Fluorescent Proteins

Fluorescent proteins are fascinating nanoscale systems that were developed for biological tagging applications but have been shown to exhibit desirable linear and nonlinear optical properties. The REU student participating in this project will use state of the art laser spectroscopic facilities to perform a combination of linear and nonlinear optical techniques such as time correlated photon counting for fluorescent lifetime measurements, Z-scan to determine the non-linear absorption and refractive index coefficients and degenerate four wave mixing for the determination of phasing times. Experimental results will be compared to computer models and simulations.
