SUBJECT: Departmental Computer Committee

This committee is charged to deal with all departmental and all college- and university-level computing and networking matters.
(i)   PCS will be our Representative to any College-level Computing/IT committees to the extent faculty representation is required.
(ii)  MC and JD will serve jointly as our Representatives to any College-level Computing/IT committees, to the extent faculty representation is not required.
(iii) DPL will be our Representative to the University Computing committees.

In instances where the committee needs to meet as a whole, DPL will serve as chair.

SUBJECT: Graduate Admissions Committee

Please perform the usual duties of screening applicants for our graduate program.

SUBJECT: Graduate Recruitment Committee

This committee is charged with continuing to advance our graduate recruitment initiatives.  In particular, the committee should look into possible development of visiting and outreach programs to regional undergraduate institutions as a possible means of establishing channels of domestic recruitment.  The committee is also encouraged to consider and develop innovative recruitment strategies.

SUBJECT: Graduate Curriculum Committee

The Committee is charged with two main tasks this coming year:

(i) To carefully review and evaluate our current graduate curriculum and to develop a proposal for an updated graduate curriculum for consideration by the faculty.

I would like to request that the Committee reports its conclusions in this matter to the faculty by mid-April 2008.

(ii) To continue with the development of a viable proposal for a non-thesis M.S. degree and to initiate all necessary administrative steps for approval. Close consultation with the Graduate School and other concerned administrative entities will be essential for this task.

I would like to request that the Committee present a non-thesis M.S. degree proposal to the faculty by mid-April 2008.

SUBJECT: Undergraduate Recruitment Committee

This committee is charged with developing new undergraduate recruitment initiatives.  The committee should explore possible approaches (for significantly increasing enrollment in both the Physics and Physics and Astronomy majors) that include but are not limited to:
(i)   developing (and involving faculty in) outreach programs
(ii)  attracting existing UGA students into our majors program
(iii) retention of our existing majors.

SUBJECT: Undergraduate Curriculum Committee

Aside from the usual duties of the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee, the Committee should look into possible ways of upgrading and modernizing our undergraduate program, as recommended by the most recent Departmental Program Review Report.

Also, please consider possible changes in introductory textbooks and instructional technologies (e.g. student response systems or automated homework systems) etc. as you see necessary.

SUBJECT: Undergraduate Awards Committee

The Committee is charged to make recommendations for awards to our undergraduate students and to organize the appropriate awards ceremonies, including a possible lecture invitation to a former UGA Physics and Astronomy undergraduate for the presentation of the undergraduate awards.

Undergraduate Awards:
1)         Hendren scholarship: $500.
2)         Simons award for outstanding junior: $100.
3)         Wheatley award for outstanding physics student: $100.
4)         Astronomy Award: $100.

Because of the strong attendance at the awards ceremonies in recent years, I would like to urge the committee to again hold the next ceremony and preceding festivities in the lobby of our building.

SUBJECT: Graduate Awards Committee

The committee should identify and appoint appropriate graduate student members to serve on this committee.

The committee should develop a policy for the administration of the new Physics and Astronomy Graduate Student Research Award for presentation to the faculty by Early November 2007.

The committee is then charged to make recommendations for awards to our graduate students and to organize the appropriate awards ceremonies.

SUBJECT: Faculty Awards Nomination Committee

This committee is charged with recommending faculty, postdocs, students and staff to be nominated for extra-departmental awards and honors and with developing the appropriate nomination dossiers. Full consideration should be given to any and all college- and university-level awards and honors, as well as to national and international award opportunities.

SUBJECT: Science Fair Coordination Committee

This committee is charged to handle our efforts for facilitating the State Science Fair, which occurs sometime in the spring. The responsibilities include communicating with the local organizers, serving as judges, and making an award on behalf of the department of a book as a prize.  Please be alert to any undergraduate recruitment opportunities since this is an excellent place to make contacts.

SUBJECT: Graduate and Undergraduate Assessment Committee

This committee is charged with implementing our departmental plans for graduate and undergraduate learning, assessment, as mandated by College and UGA policies. In particular, the Committee should:

1)         Conduct the Senior Exit Examination, as specified by our undergraduate assessment policies, at the end of the present academic year.
2)         Draft, by the end of the present academic year, an undergraduate assessment report, in accordance with applicable departmental, College and UGA policies.
3)         Draft, by the end of the present academic year, a graduate assessment report, in accordance with applicable departmental, College and UGA policies.

SUBJECT: Planning and Development Committee

***The AY0708 Planning and Development Committee (above) will be convened slightly later this fall, after the AY0607 Planning and Development Committee has presented a draft Departmental Long-Range Plan to the faculty.***

The  Committee this year is charged with updating of our (institutionally required and now aging) Five-Year Program Plan to bring it into alignment with the new Departmental Long-Range Plan.

Deadline: Documents to be ready for faculty approval by Mid-March 2008.

 This committee is charged with boosting the quality of our colloquia by

(i)   obtaining and reviewing faculty input,
(ii)  ensuring a balanced selection of topics, and
(iii) selecting speakers who are a likely to give a "good" colloquium.

Also, please make requisite arrangements for the colloquia speakers and plan ahead for potential or actual speakers for next year.
