Conceived and lobbied successfully for the establishment and funding of the National Ultraviolet Monitoring Center at the Department of Physics, UGA. This center has obtained nationwide recognition since it was founded in 1993.

 

                        Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)

Was the principal investigator of a proposal which competed successfully for the establishment of the Phosphor Technology Center of Excellence (PTCOE) sponsored by DARPA from 1993-99.

Obtained Georgia Research Alliance funding for the Center.

Invented and patented a number of persistent phosphor materials. The patents, U.S. 6,117,362 and U.S. 6,267,362, have been assigned to UGARF and are in the process of further development. A third patent has been granted in 2005; it entails a novel type of phosphor, entitled persistent energy transfer phosphors (UGARF case number 101)
