Welcome to the DEEP Scholars Program at UGA

DEEP stands for Developing Excellence in Engineering and Physics, and this scholarship program, funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation, is intended to motivate and facilitate the study of Physics and selected Engineering programs at UGA.  The overarching objectives of the DEEP program include:

  1. Recruiting increased numbers of academically talented students with demonstrated financial need to major in engineering and/or physics.
  2. Creating the structure for cohorts to develop as learning communities that provide academic and social support to improve student retention.
  3. Increasing the number of physics and engineering graduates who obtain the interdisciplinary Certificate in Engineering Physics.
  4. Engaging students in state-of-the-art STEM research and design projects with STEM faculty.
  5. Leveraging partnerships between UGA and engineering and high-tech employers in both industry and government to create partnerships and learning opportunities for students.

These objectives provide the scaffolding for a rich array of events, support structures, and professional development opportunities customized for the DEEP Scholars cohorts and designed to build a "sense of ownership" among the students.  In this way the DEEP Scholars Program is much more than just a scholarship providing financial assistance.

Application to the DEEP Scholars Program is by invitation only, and all applicants must meet the following minimum eligibility requirements:

  1. Must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or alien admitted as refugee.
  2. Must be enrolled as a full-time student taking at least 13 credit hours each semester.
  3. Must be majoring (or intending to major) in one or more of the following subjects: Agricultural Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Biological Engineering, Computer Systems Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Physics, or Physics & Astronomy.
  4. Must demonstrate financial need as an undergraduate as per the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Financial assistance through a DEEP scholarship is based on demonstrated need and is renewable for up to four years.  All DEEP scholars will be expected to make steady progress toward graduation, demonstrate adequate academic performance, participate in DEEP Scholars educational and professional development activities, and participate in an approved research or professional internship program.  Continuation in the program will be determined at regular intervals by the DEEP leadership team.

The DEEP Scholars Program will be a rewarding and worthwhile experience for all involved.  It will provide students with support, engagement, and sense of involvement in something important during their college years, and will provide lasting memories and valuable professional skills after they complete their UGA education.
