Spring 2008, Version 1, Jan. 08, 2008

Syllabus
PHYS 1212 Spring 2008
Optics, Electricity, Magnetism and Modern Physics

Instructor: H.-B. Schüttler

The textbook for this course is "Physics for Scientists and Engineers: A Strategic Approach" by Randall D. Knight, 2nd Edition, Pearson/Addison Wesley, 2007. The course will cover selected topics from Chapters 23,24,22,26-35,38-40,42,43. It will be your responsibility to keep track of all topics covered, by attending all lecture classes.

For each chapter, selected "Sample Test Problems" (STPs) will be assigned which you must study before each lecture. Working all assigned STPs is also essential for you to absorb the material and to prepare for the tests and final exam. Your solutions for textbook and sample test problems will not be graded.

Most relevant information and announcements for this course are / will be posted on the web site

http://www.physast.uga.edu/classes/phys1212/schuttler

The material to be covered in each test and test dates will be announced in the lecture and on the above web page, at least one week prior to the test date. It is your responsibility to stay informed about all announcements concerning this course by attending the lecture and by regularly checking the web site. Attendance is mandatory and will be monitored occasionally.

STPs are assigned in three blocks, for Test No.1, Test No.2, and Test No.3, respectively. To access the assigned STPs for each test block, simply click here or go to the main course web page and click on

Info on Sample Test Problems, Upcoming Tests and Final Exam .

Then click on the next upcoming test:
Test No. 1 , Test No. 2 , Test No. 3 or Final Exam ;
then follow the instructions on how to download the assigned STP block for the upcoming next test, or all STP blocks combined for the final exam.

Your overall grade in this course will be determined by your Average Percentage Score (APS) which is computed as the weighted average of the Percentage Scores (PS) of the three tests, the lab, and the final exam, as follows:

 APS  =  0.20  * [ PS(Test 1) + PS(Test 2) + PS(Test 3) ]
 +  0.15  *   PS(Lab)
 +  0.25  *  PS(Final).

Herein, PS(Test 1), PS(Test 2), PS(Test 3) are the PS’s of your 3 tests. In case the PS of your lowest-scoring test is less than that of the PS of your final exam, the PS of the final exam, PS(Final), will be substituted for that one lowest-scoring test only.

In case of an excused absence from any test, the PS of your final exam, PS(Final), will be substituted for the PS of that test.

No make-up tests or quizzes will be given !

Your overall letter grade in this course will be:

 A  if  APS >=95%
 A-  if  95%>  APS >=90%
 B+  if  90%>  APS >=85%
 B  if  85%>  APS >=75%
 B-  if  75%>  APS >=70%
 C+  if  70%>  APS >=65%
 C  if  65%>  APS >=55%
 C-  if  55%>  APS >=50%
 D  if  50%>  APS >=30%
 F  if  30%>  APS.
