The establishment of quantum theory in the mid 1920's involved a rupture with classical notions which took place at the kinematical level, with the consequence that a lot of effort and ingenuity had to be spent on `interpretation' issues over the following decade. While consistent working strategies were fully developed by the time of the seminal work of Einstein, Podolski and Rosen (EPR), the process of obtaining clear experimental evidence in support of the many odd predictions of the theory has only more recently developed, undergoing in fact a rather explosive growth, made possible by technical developments based on the theory itself. This led also to a corresponding growth of theoretical tools and to branching and specialization of theoretical concepts. It is perhaps reassuring and convenient that they can ultimately be linked to just a few basic novel concepts which were already clearly identified after the appearance of the EPR paper. Examples of such links will be discussed, in support of the idea that conceptual branching has perhaps gone a bit too far.
